Professor of the History of Medicine Offers Editing and Writing Services for Academic Physicians and Medical Researchers:
I have a Ph.D. in the allied fields of History and the History of Science and Medicine (Yale University; 1987), and I taught for over 30 years at three US and British universities, including two decades at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. I recently retired and moved to Baltimore so I can continue my scholarly research at the Johns Hopkins Institute for the History of Medicine. I am the author or editor of seven books in medical history, published with leading university presses (Harvard, Princeton, Oxford, Cambridge, and Stanford UPs). Since the late 1980s, I have supervised over 30 doctoral dissertations. I’ve served on a number of editorial boards and have critiqued scores of manuscript articles submitted for publication. I have many years of experience working with students and scholars to improve their academic writing.
In my past work as the editor of several volumes, I sometimes worked with university-based hospital physicians whose clinical and scientific work was brilliant and yet who requested assistance in the literary preparation of their manuscripts. In semi-retirement, I offer my services as a professional editor specifically for journal article, chapter, thesis, or book manuscripts in the medical sciences. I have extensive experience working with foreign--especially European and Asian--authors whose spoken English is excellent but who would like to write better idiomatic English.
I will endeavor to improve the flow, clarity, accuracy, and organization of your work for publication. I can also work with you to make your writing as interesting, effective, and readable as possible. Good writing also increases the chances of a manuscript being accepted by a premier journal or publisher.
Full c.v., including publications and professional references, available upon request.
Fees depend upon the nature and length of the project, but are reasonable.
Ideally, our initial meeting should be face-to-face, so I can gain the best possible understanding of the project you are working on and your specific goals. For this reason, clients in the extended Baltimore area are most convenient; I may also be able to work with authors from Philadelphia to Washington.
