The Shop Foreman is responsible for the daily operations of the shop, including supervision of staff, scheduling and overseeing maintenance, and ensuring all equipment and vehicles remain in safe, reliable working order. This role requires strong technical expertise in diesel mechanics, proven leadership ability, and organizational skills to minimize downtime and support field operations. Compliance with DOT regulations and company safety standards is a key priority.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and supervise shop personnel, including mechanics and helpers.
Perform and oversee diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on diesel engines, trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment.
Schedule and prioritize preventative maintenance and repairs for company vehicles and equipment.
Maintain accurate service and repair documentation, including DOT inspection records.
Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, state, and federal safety requirements, as well as company policies.
Manage and track parts inventory, balancing availability with cost control.
Train, mentor, and evaluate mechanics and shop employees.
Conduct regular safety meetings and enforce company safety protocols.
Develop and maintain fleet maintenance schedules to reduce downtime.
Support field operations by ensuring equipment availability and reliability.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
Qualifications
Maryland CDL:
Class B CDL required at time of hire.
Willingness and ability to obtain Class A CDL and Hazmat endorsement (company-sponsored).
Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, diagnostics, and repair techniques.
Strong understanding of DOT regulations and safety requirements.
Minimum 5+ years of diesel mechanic experience, with 2–3 years in a lead or supervisory role.
Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, and work orders.
Experience with Maryland Preventive Maintenance Program (PMP).
Air Brake Adjustment Certification required.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Strong communication, leadership, and team-building skills.
Basic computer skills for record-keeping, reporting, and fleet management systems.
Physical Demands
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally heavier with assistance.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and climbing in and around vehicles and equipment.
Manual dexterity to operate tools, machinery, and diagnostic equipment.
Ability to work in varying environments, including indoors, outdoors, hot/cold weather, and noisy conditions.
Visual and auditory ability to safely operate and inspect vehicles, equipment, and shop tools.
Stamina to work extended or irregular hours as needed to meet operational demands.
Work Environment
Primary work performed in a shop setting, with regular exposure to noise, dust, grease, and moving mechanical parts.
Occasional work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots required.
Fast-paced environment with frequent interaction between mechanics, drivers, and field personnel.
May involve extended or irregular hours, including evenings or weekends, to meet operational needs.
