The Maryland SPCA is looking for a part time Veterinary Technician to join our busy Wellness Clinic.
Part-time, two 10-hour shifts, Friday and Saturday, one 5-hour shift, varies Mon – Thurs

Position Summary:
The Veterinary Technician assists the clinic veterinarian in all aspects of exams, patient care, and client education. This position will include surgical, dental, and radiographic assistance and duties. Technicians will also be providing assistance to reception staff as needed with phone calls, the creation of estimates, and client communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Take accurate patient history, TPR, and weight
• Draw blood
• Place IV catheter
• Surgical preparations and anesthetic monitoring, surgical recovery and client instruction
• Perform dental prophylaxis
• Perform radiography (digital preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to use veterinary practice management software
• Accurately create treatment plans and review them with clients
• Knowledge of in-house lab equipment
• Ability to run in-house bloodwork, snap 4DX, ear discharge cytology, fecal flotation, and urinalysis
• Differentiate between the core vaccines for canine and feline and be able to speak confidently to clients regarding why and when these vaccines are given
• Administer vaccines, injectable medication both IM and SQ
• Administer oral and transdermal medication
• General know of veterinary terminology
• Accurately dispense medication and discuss dosing with clients.
• Accurately enter medical notes and charges as needed into clinic software
• Preparing vaccinations
• Organizing, restocking, & cleaning exam rooms, pharmacy area, and surgical areas

• Possession of high school diploma or GED
• Veterinary technology program and state license completion preferred but not required
• Minimum of two years of veterinary technician experience, appointment-based veterinary clinic setting
• Strong restraint and phlebotomy skills (canine and feline), familiar with dosing and various methods of medication administration
• Experience in anesthetic monitoring, surgical assistance, radiographic technique/positioning, and dentistry
• Knowledge of medical terminology, various types of medical and surgical equipment, and common veterinary protocols
• Strong computer and phone skills
• Ability to multi-task & work in a fast-paced environment under all conditions
• Excellent verbal, interpersonal, & organizational skills
• Able to communicate professionally & efficiently to clients
• Able to work independently as well as on a team, follow through with assigned tasks
• Flexible schedule, able to work weekends, overtime as needed
• Committed to and enthusiastic about the mission, programs, and services of the Maryland SPCA

Physical Demands:
• Ability to lift and/or restrain 50+ pounds
• Standing for long periods with frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and reaching
• Sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and other physical activities for a minimum of 8-hour periods

Working Environment:
• Work is performed in a clinic setting
• The technician is regularly exposed to animals, animal waste, and potentially hazardous conditions, including the risk of animal bites
• Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, sharp objects, and hazardous chemicals
