Job Description - School Advocate / Organizer
Reports to Deputy Executive Director
BTN (Baltimore Teacher Network) - Our mission is to grow, sustain, and retain a vibrant group of professional teachers in Baltimore who: mutually support each other's teaching practice; influence local school reform policy through public debates and publications; and jointly create work environments that encourage true teacher leadership and on-going innovation. In addition to supporting teachers, BTN operates charter schools; a Middle School and two High Schools in Baltimore City.
We are seeking a highly energetic self motivated individual to work in the capacity of a School Advocate / Organizer. This individual will work under the direction of the Deputy Executive Director and will be chiefly responsible for the following: Community Outreach, Assist in publishing the quarterly Newsletter, organizing Teacher Forums, and manage Parent Volunteer Training.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Coordinate program activities
2. Event planning
3. Report writing
4. Publishing the quarterly Newsletter "The Voice"
5. Community outreach
6. Maintain day-to-day contact with main office
7. Organize and support School's Governance Committee
8. Attend all School Board Meetings
9. Conduct workshops and trainings on (BCPS Student Code of Conduct, Restorative Practices, and Conflict Resolution).
The Advocate must be a critical thinker, team player, and demonstrate strategic thinking and planning skills. Monthly reports are required detailing progress on assignments and description on individual one-on-one meetings with teachers, parents and community leaders.
Work schedule will be divided between schools, community and our main office. It is important to note that this is not a usual 9-5pm position. This is a salaried position which includes some evening hours and may require occasional travel.
Motivation to work with parents, teachers and community leaders. Strong verbal and written communication skills and confidence in public speaking. Must have your own car as you will be required to travel to various locations around the city.
Interested candidates should have some knowledge of Baltimore City Public Schools. Great computer skills, attention to detail and able to provide support to the Executive Director. Experience teaching in public school is a plus but not a requirement. A college degree is preferred however, five years of community organizing is acceptable.
