I came across this old (prox 2003) Alvarez that sat in a closet for years before I found and revitalized it. Although this is a “student” model”, the fit and finish are top notch and the decorative elements are surprisingly fine in a guitar at this price point. These include a nice mahogany peghead veneer, mother of pearl ring at the rosette and zebra binding on the front. The photos tell the story.
The guitar has obviously been played lightly and shows minor handling wear, but the frets are practically new, suggesting that it was not played a lot before going into hibernation.
It received a pro setup, a new natural bone nut and compensated saddle. Then the neck was adjusted and string height set low-medium using new Elixir phosphor bronze 11s.
The sound is robust, befitting a well-aged Alvarez dread. I’ve compared the sound and playability with similar models from Epiphone, Fender and even one of the handmade Alvarez/Yairi models. This RD8C compares very favorably with them all, considering the price differences.
The Venetian cutaway body allows easier access to the frets beyond 12, making high octave melodies easier to play. The preamp with 3 sliders offers sound modification when plugged in.
These guitars sell online (used) for over $350 plus freight and tax. Since I do my own lutherie work, I can offer it for $199 (firm) set up and ready to play with no additional charges
The outfit includes the original Alvarez-marked hard shell (wooden) in very solid condition. It appears to be of Japanese origin and it’s extremely strong, if a little heavy, and its Tolex covering has a few scars. The black interior is like new and all four latches and the hinges work flawlessly. Being original, it fits the guitar perfectly,
