Tanglewood TW2 AS E (2016) all-solid mahogany
Orchestral Model (OM) Acoustic Guitar
Very Good (craigslist defaults to Good) – $339 OBO
This Tanglewood orchestral model has hit a sweet spot at ten years-old between it’s causally played-at-home-only condition and its opened-up, all-solid tonal response. I bought it new in 2021, so though made in 2016 it was a late seller.
Its tone embodies the unique, warm midrange response – with a glossy high harmonic sheen – characteristic of all-solid mahogany. Action is very low, the instrument plays very easily, and well-fits a player’s reach and body with its smaller OM size. The neck is smooth and fast.
The only caveat, the high E-string pin sits slightly low in the pin hole. It’s hard to photograph this but I did as well as possible. Importantly, there are no buzzes, all strings are secure and operating at 100% efficiency.
For this reason alone I dropped the condition to Very Good, though the guitar has no issues no dings, and only the very smallest amount of surface evidence from playing. Play and tone are entirely normal. The bridge is secure, there is no bellying, the action is very low and the truss rod works fine. The nut and saddle are in excellent condition. Tuners operate perfectly.
I would keep it, but am upgrading my collection with a Martin 00-18, so must let go of this “trusted friend.”
Electronics include a tuner. The preamp and EQ are fed by an undersaddle pickup. The battery compartment (9V) is at the bottom of the guitar w/ external access. I tested it after buying and it worked fine, but I haven’t used it since.
Tanglewood is not a small brand, they are better known in Europe. Otherwise the brand distributes guitars in 60 countries worldwide and is recognized as the UK’s all-time leading acoustic guitar brand.
Importantly, the TW2 AS E should not be confused with other less expensive Tanglewood models such as the TW2-E or the TW2-T that are not all-solid (AS). When in production this model had a street price of $500 new. And a word of warning: beware of scam sites that offer this model at unrealistic prices.
