Port Discovery Children's Museum, one of the top Children's Museum in the United States and a top cultural institution in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, is seeking a creative educator to be our full-time Visual Arts Specialist. The mission of Port Discovery is to connect purposeful play with learning. Position Summary:

Working as a member of the Education Department, the Visual Arts Specialist works to provide engaging, high quality performances at Port Discovery and ensure an exemplary museum experience for all. The Specialist researches, creates, implements, and evaluates innovative educational visual arts activities, programs, and events for young children (birth through age 10) and their families that support Port Discovery's commitment to offer innovative, interactive, playful and engaging learning experiences. In addition to leading, facilitating, and engaging in visual arts activities and events implemented in the museum and the community, solo/ one-person and/or small team, the Specialist conducts trainings for educational visual arts programs, engages in education outreach programs, supports grant-related work as it relates to visual arts programming and endeavors, and develops and maintains pertinent community partnerships that will enhance the Museum offerings and mission.

The Workweek for this position is currently Tuesday through Saturday but is subject to change. Scheduled work hours will be adjusted according to department/museum needs. Participation in special events, evenings, weekends, and holidays will be necessary.

The museum is open to the public 4 days per week now, with plans to increase operating hours in the summer. Most of the work for this position will be expected to be on-site.

Position Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Art, Arts Education, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience working in developing and delivering visual arts programming and activities, preferably with children and families, required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in public programming, preferably with children and families, required.
  • Must have interest in working closely with children, parents, educators, and museum staff in developing and delivering an exceptional museum experience.
  • Museum experience is a plus.
  • Experience in program evaluation is a plus.
  • Must have excellent presentation, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Independent problem solving and decision-making skills are necessary for success.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable non-public transportation are required (for outreach activities).

The starting pay for this position is $15.00 to $15.50.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

Must be able to meet physical demands of job to include walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling and lifting / moving objects up to 50 pounds. Largest amount of time is spent standing when delivering programming. Some sitting / sedentary time for administrative and planning tasks. Work is performed indoors, and the noise level is usually moderate to high. Must be comfortable working amongst small groups of children and caregivers. If doing outreach work, the environment of those locations are unknown.
