A study aimed at advancing our understanding of alcohol use disorder (AUD).
Dr. Leggio, a physician-scientist at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), is leading a research study to collect information about drinking habits and mental health in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD).
This study seeks participants aged 21 and older who drink regularly or have been diagnosed with AUD, are not currently in treatment, and meet the following criteria:
• Can speak, read, write, and understand English
• Own a smartphone and are willing to download the Metricwire app to answer study-related questions.
• Not pregnant or breastfeeding.
The study begins with a baseline assessment, including a medical history and other evaluations, followed by a two-stage process. Participants will attend up to 11 outpatient clinic visits (~3 hours per visit) at the NIDA Bayview medical campus in Baltimore.
• Stage 1 includes activities such as virtual reality, games, arts and crafts, puzzles, books, exposure to passive stimuli like scents, music, and visual experiences.
• Stage 2 includes watching television, movies, or videos.
Participants will also complete self-reported daily assessments using the Metricwire mobile app and take part in a bar-like laboratory experience involving alcohol consumption.
Throughout the study, participants use the mobile app Metricwire to report their drinking habits, emotions, and experiences. This data will provide our research team with a deeper understanding of AUD.
