You could qualify for a research study at NIDA.
If you are at least 18 years old and drink alcohol often, you may qualify for a research study taking place at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Baltimore.
This study, led by physician-scientist Dr. Lorenzo Leggio, aims to determine if an FDA-approved medication called semaglutide (Ozempic® or Wegovy®) when compared to a placebo, is safe and effective in reducing alcohol drinking in individuals with an alcohol use disorder who drink frequently. Placebo is a compound that looks like the study drug but doesn’t include any active ingredients.
Participation in the study includes 20 weekly visits and two follow-up visits to our clinics at the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus in Baltimore over a seven-month period. During the study, you will receive weekly shots of the study medication (semaglutide or placebo), complete behavioral therapy modules and questionnaires, undergo medical history evaluations, and provide diagnostic specimens (blood, urine, and saliva). You will also have brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and electrocardiograms (ECGs) and participate in bar-like laboratory and buffet-like virtual reality tasks. Participants must have no history of diabetes, gastric bypass surgery, untreated mental health problems, or current suicidal thoughts.
Participating in the study may earn you up to $4,400, plus local transportation or reimbursement for your visits to and from NIDA.
