Curt Flood sat out the 1970 baseball season. In November 1970, the Phillies traded Flood and four other players to the Washington Senators. He signed a $110,000 contract with Washington but played only thirteen games of the 1971 season, with a .200 batting average and lackluster play in center field. Despite manager Ted Williams's vote of confidence, Flood left the team in late April and retired.
The Curt Flood Rule, also known as the 10/5 Rule, gives baseball players with ten years of Major League service (including five years with the same team) the right to veto any trade. This rule was a result of Curt Flood's legal challenge to the reserve clause, which bound players to their teams. While Flood's legal challenge was unsuccessful, it paved the way for negotiations and the eventual inclusion of the 10/5 Rule in collective bargaining agreements.
