Up for sale is an authentic 1835 Canadian "SHIPS, COLONIES& COMMERCE" Halfpenny Merchant Token. This a fascinating piece of North American colonial history. These copper tokens were minted in England and imported into Canada (primarily Lower Canada and Prince Edward Island) to serve as local currency when government coinage was scarce. Scarce Sans-Serif Text variant (blocky lettering without decorative feet on the reverse side) The obverse displays the silhouette of a three-masted merchant ship sailing right. The reverse features the stacked text reading "SHIPS, COLONIES& COMMERCE" Heavily circulated with a dark patina and honest environmental wear from its long history. Text and ship silhouette remain recognizable. Comes with its vintage collector envelope marked "RARE" $35 OBO 26mm, 4.4 grams
