Selling a beautifully authentic 1859 $1 Obsolete State Banknote (commonly referred to as a "broken bank note") issued by the Franklin County Bank of St. Albans, Vermont. This is a phenomenal piece of local New England and American history from the pre-Civil War era. $1Note (features the red anti-counterfeit security underprint spelling "ONE") Hand-dated February 1, 1859 and hand-signed in original iron-gall ink by Cashier M.W. Beardsley and Bank President O.A. Burton. Vignettes (Artwork): Striking central engraving of a blacksmith resting with an axe by his anvil, a young woman's Cameo portrait on the bottom left, and a shield on the right. The Franklin County Bank was famously targeted and looted by Confederate soldiers during the historic St. Albans Raid on October 19, 1864-The northernmost land action of the Civil War. The note is in honest, clean, well-circulated raw Fine/Very Fine condition. The paper is historically accurate ultra-thin rag paper, allowing the ink and red security underprint to show beautifully on the reverse. Complete borders with no heavy chunks or margins missing. It is currently housed safely inside a rigid, clear, protective archival sleeve. $125 B/O
