Selling a highly unique collectible coin curiosity; a genuine 1806 Great Britain Copper Half Penny featuring a modern dealer counterstamp. The obverse of the coin is crisp and heavily hand-stamped with a clean three-line, all-caps inscription; J.E. SKALBE/NUMISMATIC/BOSTON. The host coin is a 220 year-old British copper featuring the laureate bust of King George III on the obverse and seated Britannia holding an olive branch on the reverse. The counterstamp itself was created by prominent New England dealer and colonial coin specialist James E. Skalbe (of the former Colonial Trading Company in Boston, MA.) Mr. Skalbe historically hand-stamped worn world coppers to hand out as unique promotional tokens at numismatic conventions. This specific modern merchant mark variety is officially cataloged and recognized by collectors in exonumia databases under reference number Brunks-487. On the obverse the counterstamp lettering is deep and distinct, the metal shows nice displaced ridges from the hammer impact. The reverse features the seated Britannia design. The force of the obverse strike created and incuse, backward "ghosting" silhouette of the letters ("BOS and NUMIS") pushed cleanly through the reverse side. Comes in a protective 2x2 cardboard coin flip as pictured.
