Charming original hand painted antique very large, made in London England, Hope Box - Marriage Chest - Dowry Chest - 1700's - wedding chest - 18th Century.

Wood, Dovetailed, planks, latches, metal, hand painted, laquered

This is absolutely beautiful, an early 18th Century antique hope Box or marriage chest, beautifully handmade with the most fantastic hand painted decoration.

These fabulous boxes were used by brides to be to store their personal treasures within. This particular one is provincial in style and with extensive hand painted decoration, hand made from pitch pine, with some of the prettiest hand painted decoration I have seen, it retains its original paint, that is gently worn, depicting potted flowers, particularly tulips, which were held in very high esteem during this period, in beautiful pinks, greens and ivory on a rich burgundy background with ivory and brown trim. The year " 1786" is painted on top of the lid.

A beautifully decorative useful piece of larger than usual proportions, it would look beautiful at the end of a bed or in a large window alcove.
