Fine Westerwald German Ewer / Jug with Spout
Earthenware with salt glaze and cobalt blue decoration
Westerwald / Germany, beginning of 20th century
Measures 10 ½ tall (ceramic) - 12” tall including the pewter lid
Stoneware from Westerwald has a distinctive look that combines gray clay and a cobalt blue glaze with finely carved, intricate and precise decorative elements - such as the pitchers mask spout, large curling leaf shapes and sculpted youthful Bacchus head (with grapes twined in his hair) at center front. Each piece was hand-formed, carved and painted, then wood fired for 48 hours. Salt was thrown onto the piece during the last few hours, to create the shiny finish.
