Taste Bud Study (Harbor Hospital)

This study is looking for people who are overweight and have Type II Diabetes, or who are Pre-diabetic.
This study involves 8 visits to Harbor Hospital.
-The first visit is a 3-hour screening visit. During the screening visit, you will sign the consent form, have medical history taken and physical examination done. You will also have blood drawn and a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). OGTT is a test used to diagnose diabetes.
-Visits 2 through 8 will all last approximately 4-hours each. You will be asked to complete all of these tasks (one per visit), in random order:
- Eat a peanut butter on wheat bread sandwich
- Chew and spit out a peanut butter on wheat bread sandwich
- Chew and spit out Parafilm
- Swish and spit out a glass of sugar water
- Eat a peanut butter on wheat bread sandwich and drink a glass of sugar water
- Eat 1 oz of pork rinds
- Eat 2 oz of pork rinds
During the visit, an IV will be placed in your arm so that blood samples may be taken.
You will be a part of this study for a minimum of 9 months. Study visits are a minimum of 6-weeks apart.
Study visits can be scheduled Monday thru Saturday but must be in the morning.
The purpose of this study is to measure the hormones that are secreted in response to smell, taste and digestion of food.
Total compensation is $730 if you complete the entire study. All test results are available to you upon request.
