She bonds to one person in the household, and does not do well with many people.

She might be a little aloof at times. When she choses to approach (and it is always her choice), she’d do that thing that cats do: rub herself with your hand or leg. Sam takes a while to warm up to new people and new situations, so you will have to be patient with her. If you like taking naps be warned: you'll have a purring kitty next to you! It doesn't matter if it is a well-known person or a stranger sleeping...she will hop right next to anyone who's sound asleep.

Rudy was just neutered today and the vet tells us he is only 8 months old!!!! He is a GORGEOUS big boy, believed to be a yellow lab mixed with German Shepherd (GSD) and/or Rhodesian Ridgeback. He has a very distinctive ridge up his snout. He is muscular and built like a lab/shepherd mix, but he may have some boxer in him as well - hard to say - he's pretty much an all American Mutt - but he sure is a handsome boy! (He was very camera shy so his photos do not do him justice!)

Rudy currently weighs 61 lbs. and is likely to grow some more. He has been neutered and microchipped, and is up to date on all shots and has been de-wormed. He tested a very low positive for heartworms, so prospective adoptive families will need to take him to their vet who will recommend which treatment approach is suitable for Rudy. Heartworms are not contagious to humans or other dogs, and once treated will not return if the dog is kept on monthly heartworm preventative (which is in our adoption contract anyway).

It turns out Rudy has had some extensive training already in his young life. He heels on and off leash by hugging your leg. If let off leash he runs into our woods and uses the bathroom and returns immediately when finished without even being called. He is playful and fun-loving and so far has done well with most of the other rescue dogs. On one occasion he did growl at another dog over a water dish at an adoption event, but we have seen no other signs that he is not good with other dogs. He has not been tested with cats. He is FABULOUS with children, though due to his size he could accidentally knock over a little one. Rudy exhibits absolutely no food, toy, or treat aggression with humans. We believe Rudy will be extremely loyal and protective of the family who adopts him permanently. He shows traits of extremely high intelligence, trainability, and loyalty. He does great on car rides and prefers to ride in the passenger seat like a human lol. He is crate trained and housebroken, though with any shelter dog a refresher may be necessary.

Rudy's adoption fee of $250.00 covers his neuter surgery, all shots including rabies, de-wormers, microchipping, and 4Dx testing.

She uses the box great and has no problem going up and down steps or jumping up on things! Llewelyn gets along great with other cats and rolls over on her back to have her belly rubbed. She was very close to death when we found her but is healthy and happy now. Now she needs a forever home.

Our vet estimates her to be about 9 or 10 months old. However, Llewelyn can be on the skittish side so needs to go to a quiet home with no small children and to a cat-saavy person or family with some patience. She is very sweet and enjoys being pet, will roll on her back for belly rubs, but needs to be approached in the right manner or she runs.

When he first arrived, my cat followed him around growling and hissing, but he stayed confident and ignored my cat's aggression. My cat quickly gave up on the aggression, and now they're friends.

He'd be a great cat for children because he's always been more gentle and patient than any other foster cat I've had, and I've never heard him growl or hiss even once. He's also light and easy to pick up.

There is a lot of appeal in the image of a child opening a prettily-wrapped box on Christmas Day and finding the puppy of their dreams inside. Lots of parents post that they want puppies for their children for Christmas. Before you do that, please consider the following things:

1) Do you have enough time for a pupppy? Puppies need a lot of your time and attention. Are you willing to give them that? Can you give them that, with your lifestyle and job/careers? Are you willing to take it for walks and socialize it properly so it will never have to be euthanized for aggression/behavior problems? Do you have the time and patience to put up with a hyperactive puppy zooming around the house for the next year, and (depending on the breed) a hyperactive adult dog? If you're getting a high-energy breed, can you ENSURE that you'll be able to walk it and give it the amount of exercise it needs so more destructive behaviors don't start, ending in the pet being dumped off at a shelter?

2) How responsible is your child/children? NO CHILD SHOULD EVER BE THE SOLE CARETAKER OF AN ANIMAL. Children are not mentally developed enough to appreciate the responsibility, not matter what they may say at the time. They are master manipulators, willing and capable of saying and promising ANYTHING in order to get what they want--which happens to bethat brand-new puppy or kitten. Who will take care of it once the new pet loses its novelty and the children lose interest? Are you willing to take over for what your child fails to do? Will you force your child to accept and be consistent with the responsibility? So many people get pets for their kids and when the pets lose their novelty, instead of making the child keep the promises they made to get it, they rehome the pet or worse, dump it off in a shelter. Shelters are inumdated with unwanted pets after the holidays are over in January. When that happens, the children aren't taught any lessons in keeping promises and being responsible; instead, what they are taught is that pets are disposable, and if they whine enough they will get their way and they don't have to be responsible for their promises.

3) If you're acquiring the pet as a gift for a younger distant (not in the same home with you) friend or relative, ARE THE PARENTS OK WITH THE KIND ANDTYPE of pet you are getting? This seems like a common-sense question, but you'd be surprised at just how many make this mistake. A grandmother purchases a dog for her grandchild and doesn't realize the parents live in a place where pets aren't allowed. Or they ensure it's ok with the parents, then find out after the gift is given that one of the parents is allergic to the kind of pet (cat or dog). Or they find out that one parent is allergic to a dog that sheds, but not to a dog that doesn't, and they got a breed that sheds. MAKE SURE EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THE PET IS AWARE OF THE KIND/TYPE/BREED and all characteristics thereof!

4) Is the child going to get along with this animal? And vice versa? Dogs are not like they look in the movies! Chihuahuas (Beverly Hills Chihuahua) are cute and appealing, but they don't make good children's pets because they are high strung and sensitive and can break limbs easily in the middle of a rough-and-tumble session with a rambunctious child. It take patient training of both animal and child to ensure a harmonious relationship. Labs (Marley And Me) are cute, but like the dogs trained for the movie, they are energetic and inquisitive, and can quickly backslide into bad behaviors if they aren't given adequate care, exercise, and mental stimulation to keep them from getting bored and destructive. Dalmations and Collies (101 Dalmations, Lassie) are EXTREMELY ENERGETIC and have a lot of muscle and stamina, resulting in a dog that seems to have an Energizer battery hard-wired into them and will keep going and going and going until YOU are too tired to keep up! Pitbulls are a misunderstood breed, and there is nothing wrong with them provided they are raised and trained correctly. They have a lot of energy which can quickly turn into aggressiveness and destructive behavior if not channeled properly. Are you going to exercise the larger breed dog if the child can't? Seeing a dog running down the street dragging a child hanging onto a leash behind them may look cute on TV, but if you're the parent who has to take care of the roadburn/scrapes/scratches/broken bones, it's not funny at all.

5) Is the family of the child getting the pet going to be financially capable of caring for the pet? Are you in a stable enough situation where you can afford to get shots, vaccinations, licenses, spay/neuter operations, and also care for any emergencies that might arise? Is there a contingency plan if something happens and the spouses are no longer together and neither one wants the pet/can take the pet to a new location? Is the new family committed to keeping the dog even if the apartment management/landlord suddenly decides that a residence which formerly allowed pets suddenly reverses that decision? Are you willing to move for the sake of keeping the pet, or will the pet have to be re-homed?

Now, if, after checking off 'yes' to all the conditions above, here are a few rules you should try to follow:

* Adopt from a shelter/rescue. They may cost more than the one in the paper, but you'll have medical records and in some cases, a bit of history. The person in the paper, however, may not necessarily be honest with you about the dog's circumstances. They may be so desperate to get rid of a dog/cat that doesn't fit with their lifestyle they may forget to tell you the dog's real age, or that it's gotten away with certain bad behaviors for so long that bad behaviors have turned into bad habits that are alomst impossible to break.

* Try to get as much information about the pet you're adopting. If you're adopting from a private seller, check references. When you go there to pick up the animal, don't grab, shove money into the owner's hand, and run. Sit down and talk to them. Be observant. Take a look at the surroundings, the way the owner behaves toward the animal, how the animal behaves toward the owner, and follow your instincts.

* HAVE THE CHILD/NEW FAMILY MEET THE PET FIRST. Animals have personalities just like people. Some simply don't get along, through no fault of either. To prevent getting a pet and not getting along with it, meet the pet first. If you're picking from a litter, don't pick the first one you see; observe and choose the one most suited to your lifestyle. If you want one that is energetic and gregarious, pick the first one who comes to you. If you want one that's more laid-back and couch-potato-ish, pick the one that just decides it's too much bother to get up and waits for you to come to it. If you already have a pet at home, HAVE BOTH PETS MEET FIRST. Watch their reactions, If they take an instant dislike to each other, don't try to force it. If they seem to get along, be hopeful--but try to get a promise from the seller that if it doesn't work out you can exchange.

* DON'T GIVE THE PET TO A CHILD ON CHRISTMAS MORNING!!! A new puppy will quickly take a backseat to that new Playstation 3 or PowerWheel, and those first 24 hours with a new pet, which are the most important when you want the animal to bond with you, and if that bonding doesn't take place it won't work. Wait till a few days after, or even a few days before; that way when Christmas morning arrives you can share the day with this new member of your family (and you'll have fun watching that new puppy or kitty play with paper balls, ribbons, and string.

And if you do find yourself in a situation where you absolutely CANNOT keep the pet, try re-homing first--a shelter should never be your first option. Be honest. If the dog is too energetic for you, state that; someone out there might be looking for a running buddy. If it has behavior problems, there might be somone out there with the patience and experience to work with the dog.
If everything fails and you find yourself unable to keep the pet any longer and no one wants it, please bring it to a shelter. Don't open the door and let it run free. Chances are it'll be hit by a car and end up as roadkill, or end up at the shelter injured and needing euthanization. At least at the shelter, it will be evaluated, treated, and if they are lucky, it'll have a second chance at finding a forever home that will be the perfect fit for it. Your pet should never be a 'burden'. If it's a burden it's not a good fit for either you or the pet.

Our situation is this: My fiancee is flying up on Dec. 24th to Alaska with her two other dogs to join myself and my two dogs. After the holidays we will both be returning to Baltimore to pack up her house and drive her car back home.
We were trying to find a house-sitter or kennel that could care for Rio until we can get back to Baltimore and drive her back up with us to Anchorage. Unfortunately, my fiancee is deathly afraid of Rio biting any handlers or other dogs that she comes in contact with. I spent ten days there recently and I saw the wary attitude and jumpiness that Rio exhibits, but she was very sweet and lovey to me from the beginning and without my coaxing. I know there is a good dog in there, I just think that Rio needs some kind of training or behavior therapy that my fiancee and I can not provide.
She believes that her only option at this point is to put Rio to sleep, but I really don't want her to have to do that.
Can anyone out there please help me find a handler or trainer who wants to give this dog one last chance? I know there's a good dog inside of her insecurities, I just don't know how to bring it out.

She is a very sweet, mellow girl who is housebroken-crate trained and does well on leash and off.

Roxy's only problem is, she doesn't get along with other dogs at all, so she would have to be an only child.(although she doesn't seem to mind cats)

Please remember when you adopt a rescued animal you are saving 2 lives. You saved the animals life you adopted and a shelter animal that the rescue now has room for.

When you foster a animal you are saving his/her life, without fosters we wouldn't be able to save as many dogs. Without foster homes there wouldn't be rescues.



ALL DOG ARE SPAYED/NEUTERED, UP TO DATE ON SHOTS, AND HAVE THEIR RABIES SHOT.

Adoption fees are generally $140 to $160 per dog which includes each dog's spay/neuter surgery, rabies, distemper and Kennel cough vaccines, test for heartworm and lyme disease and de worming for intestinal parasites. Senior dogs over 7 are $90 to $110.

Fostering helps save lives. We do not have a shelter and without fosters homes we have no where for the dogs/cats to go. We cover all vet care, food, and provide a crate if needed. The foster parents care for the dogs as their own, but for a limited length of time -- just until we find a permanent home for them. They provide shelter, toys, and human interaction. Many of these dogs have never been loved, you can be first to show them what it's like to be loved!

Shilo is an adorable little guy who is just as scared as he can be. We are not sure what has happened to him in his past but it sure wasn't good. He is not aggressive whatsoever, and opens up more to kids and other dogs. He really needs a VERY LOVING family to give him all the TLC he deserves. We will only place him in a home with another dog because he comes out of his shell much more when around them.
