Hey,

I have a question about agencys if you don't mind enlightening me. How does Straleigh handle the tax reporting on money that bands make? Do they give each band member a 1099 form at the end of each year showing what they made? Do they report the money a band makes to the IRS? Just trying to figure out what the real amount of money a band makes after all the commisions and taxes if applicable.

As a former member of a Starleigh band, there are a few things you must know about Starleigh. First of all, signing with them is NOT like signing with a record company/label. They are only "signing" you so that they exclusively do your booking and take a 15% cut of your earnings. They are not going to put you at Ram's Head, Recher, Angels, etc etc etc. Why?!?! Because they venues you have to sell a gazillion tickets and there is no guarantee Starleigh will make any money. They are a company out to make money, period. They DO NOT care about your band making it big at ALL. Actually that would only cause them to lose money if you signed with a label, etc. However, if you do sign with Starleigh, they WILL keep you as busy as you want really...and you WILL make great money in the process. They WILL book you at places like Bamboo Bernies, Looneys, Red Eyes Dock Bar, etc etc. There is a BUILT IN crowd on the weekends at these places/venues...so your band and Starleigh will make money. Starleigh has a HUGE list of venues they deal with and they make contracts with these places before you ever set foot in them so that your band and Starleigh makes money. Starleigh wants cover bands and good cover bands. So there are ups and downs with Starleigh. The UPs are that you can play ALOT, make great money. The Downs are that you cant book anything yourself without Starleigh taking a cut...for like 2-3 years. They take 15%...which isnt bad at all when you are making like $1000 on a Sat night. The problem for bands not with Starleigh is that they have monopolized the region. Starleigh tells clubs that if they deal with non-Starleigh bands...then they will pull their big money bands, etc.etc. It's all about contracts and money kids.

So let's summarize
STARLEIGH WANTS YOUR MONEY...ok fine, they are a business ya know.
DOES NOT CARE IF YOU ARE A BAND TRYING TO MAKE IT BIG
IS NOT A RECORD LABEL/ORIGINAL BAND PROMOTER WHATSOEVER...although they will dispute this.

My advice for a young up and coming band (if you are GOOD)...is to get with Starleigh for about 2-3 years just for exposure...play 90% covers and promote your originals/mix them in at a show. Then when you get a fanbase going, tell them about a show you may book at the Recher, Fletchers, Rams Head, etc. This way you are building interest and a fanbase, you are making money, and you are playing out ALOT. Only a few local bands have been successful doing this, but it's a start.

I have a '81 blackface (Silverface specs) Twin Reverb that I know needs some minor tooling; caps replaced, resistors checked/replaced, etc...

I don't have much electronics experience but my mind and hands are capable, I just need someone to sit down with me and show me what things are, how they operate and how to fix it. I simply need some education. I can't learn off of online sites and books because I learn by doing, not reading.

What I need is a tube amp technician who is willing to spare an evening or two a week fielding questions and making sure I'm soldering the right resistor to the right spot without blowing my heart up.

I have the basics, a voltmeter and solder, and I would be willing to purchase other necessary parts online unless you were willing to let me purchase the parts right from your work desk. I would assume meeting at your shop or wherever would be best as you definitely have access to more required materials than I do.

I will obviously pay you for your parts/time, but I would assume since I will be doing the actual work myself it'll cost less than if I just gave you my amp to fix. Plus, you don't have to miss out on doing work yourself, you can do what you need to do and just guide me along on the side.

Lastly, I live in mid-town Baltimore City. If you live in the city, that's a plus, but I'd be willing to drive to the county (only on the weekends tho). I'm very eager to learn this stuff. Just write and I'll get back to you probably immediately. Thanks,

the holy grail works for me. a spring reverb, a hall reverb, and even a flange?reverb hybrid they call flerb. i like them all; all the sounds have such a good presence, who cares that it's digital? of course i run mine thru a tube amp, i'm sure solid state will sound, solid state. maybe a nice $1500 fender will sound superior to using a $100 pedal, and maybe not enough.

Good reverb pedals? (Baltimore)

Can anyone recommend a good, versatile reverb pedal for under $150? I have a multi-effects processor (Boss ME-50) that I love all except for its really disappointing reverb. Since that processor is supposed to represent all of Boss's best effects, I'm not really interested in a Boss reverb pedal, unless someone can convince me otherwise!

I prefer something with a warm, not-so-digital sound, even if it is digital. I want something that can produce a LOT of reverb, but can also scale it back when needed. (Having to choose between the two, though, I would choose a LOT of reverb!!) I am considering the Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail at the moment, so I would appreciate any comments on that pedal or any others.

We are a three piece basement band (guitar, keys, drums) seeking a bass player. At this point, we get together once a week and try to write original material and a few covers. This is more of a fun project at this point but we would like to eventually play out. We all have played in local cover/original bands, have great equipment, and a nice practice space in my home. We have a PA and also some recording gear. We also have a new bass and amp available.

We have diverse music interests, and try to include them all. They range from jazz, jam band, alternative, acoustic, noise, etc. The bands that we listen to are fairly typical: Wilco, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Radiohead, Beatles, Sonic Youth, My Morning Jacket, Medeski Martin & Wood, etc., etc.

We have tried on Craigslist a couple times, with no luck. As the title says I'm a singer/songwriter of the Indie/Folk persuasion who is looking to form a serious working group in and around the Baltimore area. I have been playing guitar for most of my life and have been told I have a great lead voice. I am a 23 year old white male, and I've been doing a lot of open mics nights around the city lately and have finally made the decision to make this a career. I'll be purchasing a PA system this month and should be playing out (cover gigs at bars and such) by next month to pay the bills. I have about twenty original songs and I'm interested in building a more full sound around them.

I may be incorporating a female vocalist/violinist as well if all things go well sometime soon, but these are the additional instruments I am interested in experimenting with as well.

What I want this band to sound like
Looking to form a band in the Baltimore area with folk-influenced rock, at least 50% originals, but please be willing to play some traditionals and covers.

Best analog: mid-80's Waterboys. Also think: Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson. For a more local analog, maybe think Donegal Xpress.

DO NOT think: Pogues, Chieftains, Wolfstone, Wolf Tones, Flogging Molly.

About me:
I play guitar, mandolin, piano, and a little (very little) violin and penny whistle. I sing on key and with expression. I write songs in many different styles, including rock, bluegrass/old timey, country, and sort of Tom Waits-ish jazz. I have had other people record my songs, but not by anyone you would ever have heard of, so that's not worth much. I recorded a folk album 5 years ago and know some of the ins and outs of recording and producing.

What I expect and what you should expect if you're interested:

1) I will not make you famous.
2) You will have fun if you find playing music fun.
2) No touring. I have a job I enjoy in Baltimore and a house to pay for. I don't want to be poor.
3) If your ego is bigger than mine, that's fine. If your ego is bigger than David Lee Roth's, please do not apply.
4) I am more interested in creativity than strictly good musicianship. If you flub some notes sometimes but can write your own part and play with heart, you're what I want.
5) If your recreational drug or alcohol use interferes with your ability to show up to gigs or practice, please do not bother to reply. I want to play some Irish music, though, so I don't care if you have a pint or ten at gigs if you can still find the notes.
6) I am okay if you treat this like a casual thing or if it's your side project, especially because everyone good in Baltimore is in two or more bands, but I expect at least a basic willingness to show up to periodic practices.

This is a new original 4 piece band which includes vocals/keyboard, bass, drums, and one guitar (singer, bass, and drums are all former members of Cloning Kiah). We have everything but the guitar. We are all very good, very humble, very creative, and we are between the ages of 17 and 23 (we don't mind if you're older or younger than we are). We are going for a modern sound that is open minded, versatile, and with songs ranging from soft to hard. To give an easier understanding of what we are trying to go for, here is a list of mainstream bands you probably have heard before, but do not limit us only to them. Coldplay, Muse, Mutemath, Deftones, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Keane, Bjork, ATB, etc. (we are not copying a band's style, and our influences in music are a lot more than just a few) We are looking for a guitarist who will compliment the songs we write together, instead of only complimenting the guitar itself. We need a guitarist who is good enough to know when to play less or more in a song and sometimes even to know when to play nothing at all if it sounds and feels right. As I stated before, we are a serious band. That means no drugs, and no drinking alcohol right before a gig. You have to be willing to travel if we tour. We are very serious about what we do, but we are very nice people too. We believe that the band will not work if we can't be friends. If you're a nice guy, then there shouldn't be any problem. Stolen Yamaha BBG4 Bass (Baltimore)

My blue four string Yamaha bass was stolen out of my car last week while at the JHU Bayview medical campus. If anyone sees it in a pawn shop or music shop, I'd really appreciate a message. It was my first and only bass, I'd had it for 10 years. The bass is blue with black tiger stripes. Two of the three tone knobs are missing. This is what the model looks like.
