I've been finding that the best way to get things done is find like-minded (and like-hearted) people and work together. With Baltimore having been recently named "best new music scene" by Rolling Stone magazine, I feel like that presents a lot of interesting possibilities for musicians and creative people active in that scene to work together on cool stuff. Maybe somehow in the process we make Baltimore into an even better place to live and make music and be kick-ass.
Towards that end, I would like to extend the olive branch to find people who want to work together on stuff and to promote one another's work. I call it a "mutual hype alliance" and the concept is really simple. You actively promote other people's work which you like, and they promote yours (assuming they like it). That way everybody is always talking everybody up, people get lots of positive exposure, feedback and encouragement. And since people are working together and sharing audiences, when one person or group succeeds, everyone is lifted up incrementally through strands of involvement, collaboration and mutual hyping.
And now the sales pitch: I have a website which gets between 2,000 and 3,000 unique visitors per day. I've been running it for five years and writing about all aspects of media, pop culture, alternative what-have-you of all shapes and sizes, and have met tons of cool people all over the country and world as a result of it. I've been writing more and more Baltimore-specific content since I came back here from Seattle a few months back.
And now I'm putting together some music of my own on top of that, trying to get the word out and trying to find other people in the area to play and record with. You can check out my demos here, along with some basic ideas I had for how we might work together to form a mutually-beneficial hype alliance. Basically, I'm hoping to get people to cover my songs and post their results online in exchange for me publicizing your projects and group. The songs are all super-simple folk songs that pretty much anybody could learn and play in five minutes. I'm especially interested in working with other folk, acoustic and Old Time musicians, though I'm open to pretty much whatever as far as genre interpretations of these pieces go.
Anyway, if this all sounds worthwhile, shoot me an email and let's make coolness together!
